The Wild Root

My Journey to Herbalism

Hi, I’m Niels

Welcome to The Wild Root. I’m Niels Van Campenhout, a plant enthusiast, herbalist, and landscape architecture student based in Belgium.

For years, I relied on chemical medications for headaches, digestive issues, and panic attacks – until I discovered that plants are the origin of 80% of modern medicines. This revelation changed everything: why not go straight to the source?

My background in landscape and garden architecture taught me how plants create balance in ecosystems. I realized the same principle applies to our bodies. Through careful study and personal experimentation, I’ve built a practice that bridges traditional herbal wisdom with modern science.

The Wild Root was born from this journey. My mission is simple: to make herbalism accessible, practical, and safe for everyday people navigating modern life. No complicated rituals, no extreme claims – just honest, evidence-based guidance for sustainable wellness.

My Approach to Herbalism

My Philosophy

Evidence-Based

I combine traditional herbal wisdom with modern scientific research. Every recommendation is backed by both historical use and current studies.

Practical & Accessible

No complicated rituals or hard-to-find ingredients. I focus on simple, effective practices that fit into busy, modern lifestyles.

Sustainable Wellness

Real healing takes time. I emphasize long-term vitality over quick fixes, supporting your body’s natural capacity for balance and strength.

Why Herbs

Why I Believe in the Power of Plants

In a world obsessed with quick fixes and chemical interventions, herbs offer something different: gentle, holistic support that works with your body, not against it.

As a landscape architecture student, I’ve seen how plants maintain balance in complex ecosystems. They adapt, support, and heal their environments naturally. Our bodies are ecosystems too – and herbs speak that same language.

Herbalism isn’t about rejecting modern medicine. It’s about reclaiming agency over your health, building preventive practices, and honoring the wisdom that’s sustained human wellness for millennia. It’s medicine that grows in gardens, that you can understand, prepare, and trust.

The Wild Root exists because everyone deserves access to this knowledge – clearly, safely, and without the overwhelm.

Beyond the Blog

When I’m not researching herbs or writing guides, you’ll find me cycling through the Belgian countryside, playing guitar, or experimenting with new herbal tea blends in my kitchen.

I’m also passionate about music production, fitness tracking, and exploring how natural landscapes inspire both design and wellness. The Wild Root reflects all of these interests: it’s about creating harmony between modern life and ancient wisdom, one plant at a time.
